U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials saw a drug smuggler was attempting to transport hundreds of pounds of marijuana into the U.S. by covering is with bags of frozen carrots.

The drug smuggler was identified as a 29-year-old citizen from Maywood, California. He attempted to smuggle 310 pounds of marijuana from Baja California into San Diego.

The man’s smuggling attempt was thwarted Wednesday night at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. When officials grew suspicious, the driver was directed to a special inspection area where they searched the bed of his 2005 Bobtail truck. At first glance the boxes only appeared to contain frozen bright orange carrots, but a closer look revealed 42 hidden packages of marijuana.

The 310 pounds recovered have an estimated street value of about $500,000.

The driver is now being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center and is facing federal charges for attempted illegal smuggling of marijuana.
