Tonight, the mother and brother of one of the leaders of the national Dream Act movement, Erika Andiola, were arrested and taken away from their home. Erika’s mother is the best example of how undocumented immigrant with no criminal records are being caught in the dragnet of an overzealous immigration enforcement machine.

While the Obama administration has maintained that its primary intent is to remove people convicted of serious crimes, “the worst of the worst,” the majority of those deported have no criminal record whatsoever. And the majority of those with criminal records deported last year were deported for traffic offenses or minor infractions.

Erika Andiola has been a prominent leader in the immigrant rights movement. She has confronted anti-immigrant figures including SB1070 architect Russell Pearce. Most recently, she received recognition for her advocacy and received Arizona’s 40 under 40 award.
