Four journalists on the way to cover a story in central Peru died Monday when the car they were traveling in plunged into the Tarma River.

The accident occurred on Monday morning near the Carpapata area, when the group was traveling from Lima to the city of Chanchamayo, in Junin province, police said.

Among the dead are Javier Ascue, who had worked for more than 40 years for the daily El Comercio, reporter Lorena Chauca of the daily Publimetro and Marisol Rojas.

Also killed was the president of the Association of Journalists of Peru in the city of La Merced, Maria Gilda Gomez, who evidently was driving the car.

So far, rescue and recovery authorities have not recovered Gomez’s body, but the bodies of the other victims were found by police in the river and taken to the morgue at Tarma.
