Republican Presidential contender and current Texas Governor Rick Perry earlier this month sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) asking to be reimbursed approximately $350 million for housing illegal immigrants in Texas prisons.
The letter was apparently sent 10 days before Perry announced he was running for President however it’s existence has not been confirmed by DHS. Sources are claiming Perry did his own math to come up to the reimbursement amount but asserts that the federal governments owes that to the state because of its poor border enforcement. The letter implies that if the federal government had secured the border undocumented aliens would not of entered Texas and therefore would not of committed a crime mandating they get housed in a Texas jail.
Perry has always been critical of Obama and insists there aren’t enough troops at the border to keep cross-borders out. Hence the undocumented in Texas who break the law end up in state jails. The bill is for fiscal year 2009 and 2010 where Perry claims “Texas jails housed illegal immigrants for the equivalent of more than 8 million days.”
Texas currently received from the Department of Justice $30.30 per undocumented inmate and Perry says the state’s cost is closer to $45 per inmate.
