Abel Gonzales Jr. and Butch Benavides are this year’s Best Taste and Most Creative award winners at the State Fair of Texas’ Big Tex Awards.

Gonzales, 42, won the Best Taste award for his deep fried Jambalaya. His winning was created by deep-frying shrimp with Cajun seasoning and sausage,

ImageBenavides won the Most Creative award with his fried bacon cinnamon rolls. When asked about his concoction, Benavides told the Dallas Morning News he came up with the idea because he is not a big fan of sweets, but does love bacon. The creation is made by dipping cinnamon rolls in semi-sweet pancake batter, rolling that into bacon crumbles, then deep-frying it and covering it with powdered. For someone who doesn’t have a sweet tooth, he sure knows how to appeal to those who do.

The contest is considered a friendly food fight among Fair concessionaires. The contest is not open to the general public. Only concessionaires leasing space from the State Fair of Texas were eligible to enter, and 54 entries were submitted for the contest this year. On Labor Day, judges were brought in for the final round of competition between the eight finalists and ultimately chose Gonzales and Benavides.
