Brazil’s Larissa França and Juliana Silva beat the Chinese duo of Xue Chen and Zhang Xi here Wednesday to win the bronze medal in women’s beach volleyball at the 2012 London Olympics.
The Brazilians lost the first set by a lopsided 21-11, but came back to win the second 21-19 and seal the triumph with a 15-12 win in the third set.
Xue and Zhang took the bronze at the 2008 Games in Beijing.
Larissa and Juliana, the reigning world champions in the sport, lost their chance for Olympic gold in a semifinal defeat to Jennifer Kessy and April Ross of the United States.
The U.S. pair now face a final with their countrywomen Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, who won the gold in the 2004 and 2008 games.
The bronze for França and Silva brought Brazil’s all-time Olympic medal count to 101, including 20 golds, and the Brazilian men’s soccer team has a chance to add to that total when it squares off with Mexico in Saturday’s final at Wembley Stadium.
