A woman in Southern California was arrested after she tried to kidnap a newborn baby girl on Monday.
Grisel Ramirez, 48, reportedly dressed as a nurse at the Garden Grove Medical Center, told a new mother to take a shower. When the mother was out of sight, Ramirez put the infant in a duffel bag and attempted to carry her out of the hospital.
Ramirez did not get far however, as sensors are placed on the babies and hospital employees were alerted the moment she crossed a certain threshold in the ward.
Police say the infant was only in the duffle bag for a few moments and was not harmed.
She has no recorded history of mental illness, but police say Ramirez was uncooperative after her arrest. It was also determined that she was likely the woman who entered an Anaheim hospital last week, asking a barrage of questions about pregnant women. After she left that hospital, employees called police and a flier with Ramirez’s photo was circulated in the area.
Authorities say she has lived in the U.S. for the last 20 years, but have reason to believe she is not here legally.
