President Obama has declared an ‘emergency’ exists in Puerto Rico after the island was hit by Hurricane Irene on Sunday.  Now the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Homeland Security can coordinate aid to all 78 municipalities affected.

The government will also provide equipment and funding resources for the recovery process.  The island is still being inundated with rain this morning, after the first hurricane since 1998 has hit the island.

Hurricane Irene resulted in nearly one million islanders being without power, 100,000 lost their water service and there are many downed trees and flooded streets hampering the recovery.
