Taking a bold step in his attempt to increase tourist travel to Mexico, President Felipe Calderon became a tour guide of sorts for the travel show to be broadcast on PBS next month.

In recent years, Mexico’s reputation as a lawless nation full of drugs and violence has severely hampered the country’s tourism industry. Looking to change that view of his country, Calderon, 49, will be seen scuba diving in the Yucatan, repelling into caverns, and lead a paddle boat trip down a jungle river to the state of Chiapas.

The 30-minute episodes will be part of PBS’s show The Royal Tour in which host Peter Greenberg travels to various locations guided by that country’s head of state.

Though the show is primarily about the travel, Greenberg will speak with Calderon on about U.S.’s perception of Mexico and its safety, as well as other issues.

The Royal Tour: Mexico was It is set to begin airing September 22 in the U.S. and September 23 in Mexico.
