Mexican authorities are reporting the shooting death of three policemen at Mexico’s City International Airport (Aeropuerto Internacional de la Ciudad de Mexico Benito Juarez) earlier today. The federal police officers were at the airport to arrest individuals believed to be involved in narco-trafficking out of the airport.
The shooting occurred in Terminal 2, at approximately 9:00 am CST, by the food court and away from the security checkpoint for ticketed travelers. According to the Associated Press, witnesses describe the shooters as dressed in police uniforms. Authorities have not confirmed if the suspects were police officers or imposters with uniforms.
Apparently the suspects opened fired when they saw they were surrounded by federal police. After the shoot out, the gunmen fled and escaped to the airport parking area and thus far no one is in custody for the shootings.
Overall, airport shootings in Mexico are rare.
