After nearly 30 years, Germany has returned a 600-year-old mummy to Peru.
The mummy was reportedly stolen from a tomb near Peru’s Alpamayo Mountain in the Ancash region sometime in the 1980s.
Though no one involved in the return of the mummy to Peru knows how, it is believed the mummy was taken out of Peru in 1986.
The mummy had been in an ethnology lab in Munich when experts determined the mummy had come from Peru.
Thursday, Peruvian President Ollanta Humala returned from his European trip with the precious cargo after it was formally returned in Berlin.
The Peruvian government commended German authorities for their work in getting the mummified body back “home.”
The same year the mummy had been taken out of Peru, it was confiscated by German authorities, which then gave it to the Museum of Ethnology in Munich.
The museum’s deputy director says the mummy had never been put on display.
