A Georgia nanny has been arrested after police say she was on the phone when two children in her care drowned in a swimming pool.

Marta Sophia Corvi, 58, was reportedly on the phone for 45 minutes while two 5-year-olds, Sophia Juarez, and Mia Penoyer, Corvi’s granddaughter, went outside to play and wound up in the backyard pool.

Sophia’s father, Eduardo Juarez, said the family had gone to the store and left the girls in Corvi’s care. Juarez believes Sophia may have jumped into the pool to help Mia since she was a swimmer and Mia was not, but was unable to save Mia or herself.

Corvi now faces two counts of reckless conduct and was being held at the Paulding County Detention center.

Though it is unclear why, Corvi had to be taken to WellStar Paulding Hospital after the incident.

The Stir is reporting one of the girls’ father was the one who checked the phone records and discovered Corvi had been on the phone with a friend for about 45 minutes.
