NYC: Record Number of Latino Teen Graduating from High School

The number of Latino students who graduated from New York City’s public schools increased by 54 percent in 2012, compared to figures from 2005, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday.

“Over the last 10 years, our students have made tremendous gains, meeting higher standards and learning the skills they need to thrive in the 21st century,” the mayor said in a statement.

STUDY: College Degree Obtainment at Record Levels for All, Including Latino Demographic

A new report from the National Center for Education Statistics shows that a record number of people are obtaining their college degree including Latinos and African American students.

In 1995 only 25.7 percent of Americans between the ages of 25-to-29 had a college degree in 2012 33.5 percent had obtained a degree. The report shows young women had made the most leaps in increasing the numbers of women with college degrees

Pearl Arredondo grew up in East Los Angeles, the daughter of a high-ranking gang member who was in and out of jail. Many teachers wrote her off as having a problem with authority. Now a teacher herself, she’s creating a different kind of school and telling students her story so that they know it’s okay if sometimes homework isn’t the first thing on their minds.

Pearl Arredondo helped establish a pilot middle school that teaches students to be good communicators in the 21st century.

She is also featured in the short documentary film TEACHED Vol.1: “The Blame Game,” and is a role model for young Latinas seeking to make a difference in their communities.
