Oklahoma Says Good-Bye to 9-Yr Old Antonia Candelaria: 1st Tornado Victim to be Buried

Nine-year-old Antonia Candelaria is the first Oklahoma tornado victim to be buried. The Plaza Towers third-grader lost her life on Monday when a EF-5 tornado hit Moore, Oklahoma leveling her school. The death toll stands at 24, 10 of which are children.

In Candelaria’s obituary the family describe the special friendship between Antonia and her best friend Emily Conatzer who also perished in the tornado.

New LAX Terminal Pavilion to be Named after Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has received an early retirement gift – the naming of a portion of the new international terminal at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The 60-year-old Mexican-American mayor will leave office next month after serving as Mayor since 2005. He is the third Mexican-American mayor of the second-largest city in America.

Labor Dept Provides $9 Million in Funding to Reduce Child Labor in Colombia

The U.S. Department of Labor has announced it is giving the Latin American country of Colombia $9 million in funding to reduce child labor in mines.

The Labor Department noted that thousands of children work in Colombia’s mining sector thereby exposed to injuries, toxic environments and explosions.

Cubans Now Allowed to Import Electric Applicances

Cuban customs authorities starting on Monday authorized individuals to import electric appliances and mopeds in a resolution eliminating the prohibition on such imports that had been in force since 2005.

Resolution 143 published on Monday in the island’s Official Gazette sets forth that Cuban citizens traveling abroad may import refrigerators, air conditioners of any type or model, microwave ovens, stoves and electric ovens.

JUST IN: Oklahoma City Tornado Leaves at Least 37 Dead

As many as 37 people have been reported dead after a gigantic tornado more than three km (1.8 mi.) in diameter ravaged the area south of Oklahoma City on Monday, destroying or heavily damaging numerous homes and at least schools, according to media reports.

Local KFOR television initially reported that four people had died, among them a boy, while CNN and NBC reported that there had been 10 fatalities. Most recently the medical state examiner reported 37 fatalities with the death toll expected to rise.

A man was arrested in New York after he allegedly shot and killed a gay man in Greenwich Village after following him and his partner down the street yelling homophobic slurs.

Elliot Morales, 33, is being held without bail after he trailed, threatened, and shot 32-year-old Mark Carson in the face at point-blank range.

Police say Carson was walking along the Avenue of the Americas with his partner at around midnight when the couple was confronted by Morales, who began following them and spewing homophobic slurs and comments like, “What are you, a gay wrestler?”

NTSB: Lower Legal Blood-Alcohol Level .08 to .05, Latino Drivers Stand to Benefit Greatly

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in its advisory role has recommended the legal blood-alcohol level for all drivers be lowered to .05 from .08.

NTSB believes the change would save some 500-800 lives annually from traffic-related deaths. Currently drunk driving contributes to a third of all road accidents.
