The “Queen of Tejano Music” was born on April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas, and according to Joe Patoski’s “Selena: como la flor”, at 2:29 AM.
The SUN at 25 degrees of fiery ARIES made a 90 degree connection to planet MARS, the sign’s ruler. SUN/MARS provides a person dynamic energy and makes them very competitive. MARS was in Capricorn at Selena’s birth, the sign of its exaltation, making her an ambitious achiever.
NEPTUNE, planet of inspiration, creativity, and glamor was 4 degrees from her Career House cusp indicating the prominent role the arts would play. 3 degrees from NEPTUNE was the planet of good fortune and success, JUPITER. JUPITER/NEPTUNE indicates someone guided by inner faith. In her Career House, this shows Selena’s lifelong desire to help others. Her VENUS, (beauty,
charm, and the arts) was in PISCES in her Second House of talents, skills and wealth. NEPTUNE on her Career House cusp ruled her VENUS.
At Selena’s birth, planet URANUS was directly opposite CHIRON. She was destined to be a successful, creative, independent rebel.
At age 9, Selena began signing ith her older siblings “A.B.” and Suzette. Their band, Selena y Los Dinos, was often refused bookings at venues across Texas. Tejano music was a music genre dominated by male singers. Selena would challenge that status quo.
In the summer of 1987, the midpoint of her natal SUN and her progressed SUN, an indicator of where Selena was at that juncture in life, was at 3 and a half degrees of TAURUS. 16, she was building her career. That midpoint made a 22.5 degree connection to her natal URANUS. Her individual brilliance was to shine that year, and the world would see it. The midpoint also connected to the Cardinal Axis.
At a ceremony in San Antonio the night of March 7, 1988, Selena would be awarded the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year 1987. By then this critical solar midpoint was on the midpoint of her natal JUPITER and APOLLON. APOLLON is a “super-sized” JUPITER. That day the transiting SUN was on the midpoint of her PLUTO and ZEUS…she would be recognized for great creative power. Her career would meet extraordinary success. Besides thecommercial success of her music, Selena would go on to win this particular award nine consecutive times!
Not everything would be easy, as noted by Selena’s natal SATURN, the “greater malefic,” in a stressful 90 degree to her Lunar Nodes. The Lunar South Node represents the experience we bring from past lives; the Lunar North Node, what we are to pursue here. SATURN indicated that she would have to work very hard for whatever she would accomplish; and that she’d meet many restrictions.
There were 2 other planetary energies at Selena’s birth indicating trouble. The SUN, life purpose, was at an awkward 150` to PLUTO, the obsessive striving for power. PLUTO also embodies the unconscious. Selena would face challenges as she made her way forward.
PLUTO also made a 90` to Selena’s MOON, which represents our feelings and emotions. It can symbolize a significant woman in our lives; and for a performer, the public. MOON/PLUTO is the “Fatal Attraction” syndrome. At a subconscious level, Selena attracted an obsessive woman into her life in the form of Yolanda Saldivar, a woman 11 years her senior, who wanted to start a fan club.
Saldivar was ambitious and hardworking. Her Virgo SUN connected with MARS like Selena’s. It also connected with JUPITER. This planet of luck was right on Selena’s Sagittarius MOON. Initially, she would be a nurturing mentor and promoter of Selena’s talent.
There were numerous inter-chart connections that bode ill. Saldivar’s SUN was on Selena’s PLUTO. Her SATURN made a 90` to Selena’s planet URANUS. Selena’s URANUS did the same to her SATURN. There would be power conflicts. And attempts by one to restrict the other would by stymied. Finally, Saldivar’s NEPTUNE, which may have drawn her to Selena in the first place for the “glamor”, was opposite Selena’s MERCURY. She held information back and twisted facts. The confrontation which led to Selena’s murder was over the discovery that Saldivar had embezzled money from the fan club and Selena’s boutique.
Though her life was cut short, Selena brought Tejano music closer to the mainstream.
