Esteban Loaiza, better known as the ex-husband of the late, great banda singer Jenni Rivera, has been arrested on suspicion of being a narco.
The Tijuana native was arrested last Friday by San Diego authorities for having 20 kilos (44 pounds) of coke and heroin ready for distribution and sale. The exact details of his arrest have not been made public but the 46-year-old currently sits in a San Diego County jail with a $200,000 bail.
Loaiza’s narco stash has an estimated street value of about half-a-million dollars. Chump change in terms of narco trafficking but does beg the question why would Loaiza needs the money with his professional baseball earnings estimated at nearly $45 million. He made Latino baseball history with his 126-winning game record, the second most for a Mexican-born pitcher.
Loaiza was married to Rivera for little over two years, until her untimely death in a plane crash on December 9, 2012 in Nuevo Leon, Mexico enroute to a performance. La Diva del la Banda had filed for divorce from Loaiza two months before her death.
The MLB pitcher went on to sue the owners of Rivera’s plane for $35 million alleging lost future income and loss of companionship. That’s called balls especially when the divorce filing was predicated on rumors of infidelity by Loaiza.
The divorce and bitter feelings between Loaiza (her third husband) and Rivera stemmed from rumors that he slept with her eldest daughter Chiquis – a rumor dined by both. Mother and daughter were estranged thanks in great part to Loaiza. In turn Loaiza accused Rivera of being verbally abusive and cheating on him.
Loaiza will return to court on Wednesday for another hearing on the charges.
