Today in 1951 the talented rock guitarist Jorge Santana was born in Autlan de Navarro, Jalisco, Mexico. Santana often performs and tours with his older brother Carlos Santana but has been a member of other notable musical groups including Malo, a Latin rock group.
Santana is one of six children whose father was a professional mariachi violinist in Mexico. He often cites his older brother as a key musical influence, helping him understand the concept of “world music”.
Malo, co-founded by Santana in San Francisco, produced four albums with its biggest hit Suavecito released in 1972. San Francisco is where the Santana family migrated to after leaving Autlan de Navarro and then leaving the border town of Tijuana. The Mexican guitarist has also produced two solo albums. It was during the 1990s that Santana formally joined his brother, their 1994 debut album Santana Brothers broke onto the Billboard 200 chart.
Santana shares his musical talents with his brother’s management company, as director of artistic relations.
