Yes it’s the story of the murder of the late great Italian designer Gianni Versace but Hollywood called on a mostly Latino cast and a Spanish beauty to tell the tragic tale.
This Wednesday, January 19, the third installment of the popular American Crime Story series returns to the FX network with The Assassination of Gianni Versace. The nine episode series relies on some of the best Latino acting talent in Hollywood and the Oscar winning actress Penelope Cruz.
The series delves into the final days and weeks of Versace, 50, before being shot to death by serial killer Andrew Cunanan on July 15, 1997 in Miami. The gay prostitute killed a total of five strangers in the summer of 1997 before finally taking his life after Miami police found him eight days after the Versace assassination.
The American Crime Story cast and crew are hoping to garner the same success it did with its first season show The People v O.J. Simpson which garnered nine Emmys and two Golden Globes.
The Latino-centric cast is as follows:
Ricky Martin: portrays Antonio D’Amico, Versace’s long-term lover. The versatile Puerto Rican talent is more known for his music than his acting, having started his career at 12-years-old with the boy band Menudo. Martin, who recently wed his partner Juan Yosef, is getting ready to launch a new Las Vegas show this September and has a full calendar of concert commitments this year.
Edgar Ramirez: leads the talented ensemble portraying designer Gianni Versace. The Venezuelan actor recently starred in Gold with Matthew McConaughey and in Netflix’s Bright. The multi-linguistic actor has starred in a wide range of box office hits that include: Girl on the Train, The Bourne Ultimatum, Joy and Zero Dark Thirty. Coincidentally Cruz and Ramirez have another project debuting in 2018 Love Child, the story about a highly inappropriate and dysfunctional relationship between mother and son.
Jose Zuniga: The Honduran actor returns to American Crime Story to reprise the role of Detective Navarro
Dascha Polanco: The Orange is the New Black star also returns like Zungia to the series portraying Det. Lori Wieder.
The cast is rounded off with the talents of Spanish beauty Penelope Cruz, in her first American TV role, protraying Donatella Versace. Donatella, Versace’s sister, now runs the fashion empire. In 2009, Cruz won an Oscar for her role in the Woody Allen film Vicky Cristina Barcelona, this being her third Oscar nomination. Recently she starred alongside Johnny Depp, her Pirates of the Caribbean co-star, in Murder on the Orient Express.
