Jay Z is joining a super-star team producing a film version of the Broadway hit In the Heights. In the Heights was Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first musical, having written the music and lyrics based on a book by Quiara Alegria Hudes.
The play debuted in 2007 to much acclaim, nominated for 13 Tony’s and eventually winning a Tony for Best Musical and a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album. The story centers on the struggles of first generation Dominican-American Usnavi as well as that of his friends that reside in the close-knit community of Washington Heights.
Jay Z joins mega-Hollywood honcho Harvey Weinstein and Scott Sanders, Broadway producer of The Color Purple. It is not clear what acting role if any Miranda will have in the film, conceding he might be too old to play the lead character. Miranda is also one of the producers of the film.
In the Heights pioneered the combination of Latin rhythms with hip-hop lyrics, which is what Miranda did again for his latest Broadway creation Hamilton.
The play remains popular having just ended, an award-filled run in London’s West End.
