Lin Manuel Miranda, award-winning playwright and avowed humanitarian celebrates his 38th birthday today. The gift to Broadway and Puerto Rico is said to be celebrating privately with family and friends.
Miranda has been very busy since he left the original cast of Hamilton in July 9, 2016. There have been movie scores (think Moana), a ‘genius grant’ from the MacArthur Foundation, hosting Saturday Night Live and getting ready to star in the Mary Poppins sequel.
Somehow the Puerto-Rican star makes time for his humanitarian work including trying to help Puerto Rico recover after the devastation of Hurricane Maria. Last year Miranda made several visits to the island where many relatives still live and donated $2.5 million to local charities. As a gift to Puerto Rico’s people he will be bringing ‘Hamilton’ to local audiences and reprising the lead role of Alexander Hamilton.
The big news for Miranda in 2018, will be the new addition to his family that includes wife Vanessa and three-year-old Sebastian.
Genius is a word often used when speaking of Miranda. His ‘Hamilton’ creation won 11 Tonys and a Pulitzer for drama – not bad for a 38-year-old.
Hamilton cast member Isaiah Johnson recently noted “He’s a genius and I think people still don’t quite realize the effect that’s he’s having on the scope of theater and art ... It will be something that will dawn on us 50 years from now.”
