Today in 1966 Mexican actress Salma Hayek was born in Coatzacoalcos, Vera Cruz Mexico. Long before American audiences embraced her for the 2002 Oscar nominated role as Frida Kahlo in Frida she was a well-known talent in Mexico. Hayek starred to great acclaim in the Teresa telenovela and several Spanish language films.
Hayek arrived in the states in 1991 to see if she could make in Hollywood. Since then she has starred in a slew of films including Beatriz her most recent project currently in theaters. The biggest surprise to her legion of fans was her comedic talent that was on displayed in several TV projects, appearing in Ugly Betty and 30 Rock.
The ambitious Mexican talent has never been satisfied with merely acting in front of the camera. Hayek has also produced projects she is passionate about and is a business entrepreneur running her own beauty line Nuance. In 2014, she produced Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet as an homage to her father’s Lebanese roots.
Long before it was “in” to be a Hollywood activist Hayek was an outspoken advocate for immigrant and women’s rights. She utilizes her Salma Hayek Foundation to help the children who live in the streets of Mexico. The ageless beauty shares her life with her husband Francois-Henri Pinault and her nine-year old daughter Valentine. The world is her home maintaining residences in Los Angeles, New York, Mexico, London and Paris.
