NARCO BLOG:  Armed Commandos Attack ‘Veredicto Popular’ Magazine Editor

At approximately 11:00 p.m. last night, strong detonations bombarded the home of Rosario Olan, editor of the magazine Veredicto Popular, or Popular Verdict located in Cardenas in the state of Tabasco.

An armed group traveling in two cars opened fire on the exterior façade of the reporter’s residence, presumably as a threat.

Olan’s family was gathered in the living room of the home, when they were surprised and immediately fled in case the attackers would enter the home.

The incident was reported to authorities immediately and they rushed to the scene shortly after. Lino Ramos, director of the Municipal Police, arrived with the Mexican Army and local police officers.

To the surprise of many, the attacked journalist identified the Public Safety Director of the city and its former mayor, Salvador Anguino Almeida as the people he suspected were behind the attack.

“Personally, I have always identified myself as a person who is not against or for organized crime, because I recognize that is the role of authorities. In such a way my magazine Popular Verdict does not handle sensationalism, but rather gives priority to politics,” said Olan.

“We criticize the officials who are using power to enrich themselves overnight and that by a twist of fate are not prosecuted properly, as is the case of Salvador Anquino, former mayor of Cardenas, who in less than three years has became another rich Cárdenas citizen,” concluded the besieged journalist.
