The charred bodies of two decapitated people were found before dawn Wednesday in a vehicle abandoned in an affluent section of the Mexican capital, authorities said.
It was shortly after 5:00 a.m. that firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle in flames at an entrance to a mall in the borough of Cuajimalpa, the district attorney’s office said.
The firefighters spotted the headless bodies inside the SUV and police later found the severed heads of a man and woman near the vehicle.
Accompanying the bodies was a message of the kind often found at scenes of gangland killings.
While authorities did not disclose the content of the message, media accounts said a local mob known as La Mano con Ojos (The Hand With Eyes) claimed responsibility for the double-murder.
Wednesday’s gruesome discovery came two days after authorities found the charred and headless bodies of three men left inside a vehicle in the Mexico City suburb of Naucalpan.
A “narcomessage” from the La Mano con Ojos and another gang, Nueva Generacion, claiming responsibility for the killings was found with the bodies.
Clashes pitting drug cartels against each other and the security forces have claimed more than 50,000 lives in Mexico - according to media tallies - since December 2006, when President Felipe Calderon took office and militarized the struggle against the drug gangs.
