At around 10 am two children under 11 years of age left their homes in the town of Cosio, Aguascalientes. At approximately 19:00 pm a car was reported be on fire outside the Canvas Charro in the same locality.
Police were called to the scene, and retreated after controlling the fire, however, doubts brought them back to the site, witnesses cited a strong smell of burning flesh.
The officers decided to check the trunk of the badly burnt white Chevy Sprint; they opened the trunk, to a gruesome discovery.
Inside the trunk there were two burned bodies, which were later identified as the children who had left their homes that morning and had not already returned.
Municipal as well as State Police and military elements cordoned off the area to conduct investigations.
Early reports indicated that the children had been tortured, and one of them had been shot in the head, several shell casings were found at the site.
Witnesses said that before the car caught fire, an armed group was seen struggling with the trunk, and allegedly setting the vehicle on fire.
Hours after the horrific incident, authorities and media have changed the version of events, indicating that the children had been hiding inside the car to smoke cigarettes, not knowing that inside the vehicle were several bullets; the fire caused one of them to burst out directly into the skull of one of the children. They said the bruising on their bodies had been caused during their attempts to escape the trunk where they were locked.
