A Russian businessman who owned the Chalet Maya hotel near the Mexican Caribbean resort city of Cancun was murdered over the weekend, the Quintana Roo state Attorney General’s Office said.

Igor Poiarkov’s body was found Saturday afternoon on a dirt road in the Isla Blanca area, which is close to his hotel, the AG’s office said.

Isla Blanca is on the land portion of the city of Isla Mujeres, adjacent to Cancun.

The 46-year-old Poiarkov was shot seven times in the heart, hands and under one of his arms, and he had numerous wounds on his head, the AG’s office said, citing the results of the autopsy.

The coroner’s office determined that he was murdered around 10:00 p.m. on Friday night.

Poiarkov was reported missing after he left the hotel on Wednesday night.

His automobile was found about 300 meters (328 yards) from the Chalet Maya with the doors open and the keys in the ignition, and the businessman’s passport and other documents were found in the vehicle.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that it was a revenge killing because Poiarkov obtained title to the hotel after winning a trial for unjust firing.
