Federal police captured a top hired gun for the Juarez drug cartel in the central city of Aguascalientes, Mexico’s Public Safety Department said.

Jesus Valentin Nuñez Lugo had been in charge of protecting the cartel’s leaders and battling the outfit’s enemies in Chihuahua, capital of the likenamed northern state, the department said in a statement.

The 33-year-old suspect recently transferred his base of operations to Aguascalientes due to heightened pressure from federal police and troops in Chihuahua, authorities said.

Nuñez, who served with the Chihuahua state police from 2001-2007, was part of Los Linces (The Lynxes), a group comprised largely of army veterans that serves as the armed wing of the Juarez cartel, the Public Safety Department said.

As the Linces chief in Chihuahua city, Nuñez cultivated his old cop connections to recruit state police commanders to collude with the Juarez cartel in exchange for bribes, the department said.

He was arrested in possession of an AK-47 assault rifle, ammo, a grenade, communications gear, documents and a container of crystal meth.

Separately, a local boss of the Los Caballeros Templarios gang was apprehended in the western state of Michoacan, the Public Safety Department said.

Christian Enrique Lara Hernandez, 28, oversaw retail drug sales and protection rackets in the city of Uruapan, according to the official statement.

Lara was expelled from the Michoacan state police in 2008 on suspicion of murder.
