One of the sons of drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” (Shorty) Guzman, Mexico’s most-wanted man, was arrested Thursday by marines in the western state of Jalisco, the Navy Secretariat said.
Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar was captured Thursday morning, thanks to “intelligence work,” the secretariat said in a brief statement.
Guzman Salazar was arrested in the city of Zapopan along with another unidentified person, media reports said.
The son of the top boss of the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel is expected to be paraded before reporters later in the day in Mexico City.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, or OFAC, included Guzman Salazar in a list of international drug traffickers subject to asset freezes under the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act, making him ineligible to engage in financial or commercial transactions with U.S. persons or entities.
Chapo Guzman’s wife, Maria Alejandrina Salazar Hernandez, was also added to the list.
The 26-year-old Guzman Salazar and his father face drug charges in the United States.

“Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar, along with his father Joaquin ‘Chapo’ Guzman Loera, was indicted on multiple drug trafficking charges in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in August 2009. Maria Alejandrina Salazar Hernandez provides material support to the drug trafficking activities of her husband Guzman Loera and the Sinaloa Cartel,” the U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement.
Two of Guzman’s other sons - Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar and Ovidio Guzman Lopez - were included in the list on May 8.
Chapo Guzman has been on the list of U.S. drug kingpins since June 1, 2001.
The Sinaloa organization, sometimes referred to by officials as the Pacific cartel, is the oldest drug cartel in Mexico and has an extensive drug distribution network in the United States.
Guzman, who was arrested in Guatemala in 1993 and pulled off a Hollywood-style jailbreak when he escaped from the Puente Grande maximum-security prison in the western state of Jalisco on Jan. 19, 2001, is considered the most powerful drug trafficker in the world.
Chapo Guzman tops the list of Mexico’s 37 most-wanted criminals and is on the Forbes list of the world’s richest people.
Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar is one of Chapo Guzman’s three sons with Maria Alejandrina Salazar Hernandez, who was his first wife. The couple’s other two sons are Cesar and Ivan Archivaldo.
Chapo Guzman was also married to Griselda Lopez.
In 2007, he married Emma Coronel, a niece of Ignacio “Nacho” Coronel, a Sinaloa cartel boss who was killed in a shootout with Mexican army troops on July 29, 2010, in Guadalajara.
Emma Coronel gave birth to twin girls on Aug. 15, 2011, at a hospital in Southern California.
