Today we celebrate tequila one of the world’s favorite beverages served best on the rocks or in a shot glass. Tequila comes from the blue agave plant and can only be recognized as tequila if the distilled beverage originates from Tequila, Mexico in the state of Jalisco. Mexican law permits tequila to only be produced in four regions of the country with most of the production coming from Jalisco.
Mexico’s Consejo Regulador del Tequila estimates there are over 1,000 brands of tequila including marquee names like Patron, Casamigos and of course everyone’s favorite Jose Cuervo. However there are only limited types of tequila: blanco, reposado, anejo and extra-anjeo.
Tequila consumption is on the rise globally with no signs of slowing down. Since 2002 U.S. consumption has been on the rise, today Americans consume 40 million gallons annually. This year Americans are expected to spend $2.9 billion on tequila, on Cinco de Mayo alone Americans consume nearly 130 liters of tequila and mezcal to celebrate.
The U.S. is the largest tequila consumer in the world. Salud!
