Xavier Becerra:  California’s First Latino Attorney General

Xavier Becerra

Hispanically Speaking News celebrates Hispanic Standout: Xavier Becerra, California’s first Latino attorney general.

The 58-year-old son of Mexican immigrants made history last month when Governor Jerry Brown administered Becerra’s oath of office. The former 12-term Democratic Congressman was nominated by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate and Assembly to replace the former attorney general, the now Senator Kamala Harris.

During his 24 years in Congress representing Los Angeles, he was the most senior Latino house member and served as chairman of the House Democratic caucus. The Congressman arrived in Washington in 1993 and typically voted along party lines, voting against President George W. Bush’s tax cuts and the Iraq War but went rogue in 1996 when he voted against gay marriage citing most Latinos are
Catholic.

Becerra has come a long way from the days when he toiled alongside his immigrant parents eventually getting his undergraduate and law degree from Stanford University. He is the first from his family of six to go to college. Becerra’s mother is from Guadalajara and his father was born in the U.S. but raised in Tijuana. His father started his life in the U.S. picking vegetables eventually doing construction work.

California’s top lawyer has stated he is ready to advocate for the state’s large immigrant community and the state’s environmental policies that are expected to be assaulted by President Donald Trump.

Arturo Vargas, executive director of the National Assn. of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, predicted Becerra “will set the gold standard for defending the values of the Golden State and fighting for the rights of Latinos and all Californians.”
