Diego Luna Enjoying Success with His First Blockbuster Film: ‘Rogue One’

Mexicos’ Diego Luna is enjoying his first blockbuster success in ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”. The film is killing it in the box office, surpassing $500 million in global ticket sales over the Christmas holiday weekend, a trend that is expected to continue over the New Year holiday. This is an amazing feat considering the original cast and creator of Star Wars were not involved.

Luna plays Rebel intelligence officer Captain Cassian Andor in this his first involvement in a film franchise. He is undaunted, nonetheless, with the responsibility to the film, its legacy and its millions of fans. The character is described as “committed, steady and practical.” All traits this former telenovela actor has shown throughout this career. His commitment to his art has allowed him to produce over two dozen films and television shows. Luna made his directorial debut in 2014 with “Chavez” a movie about Cesar Chavez, founder of the farm workers movement.

Rogue One is produced by Disney, the new owner of LucasFilms, the genius behind the Star War franchise. The story takes places 25 years-period “between the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy.” It is a time of strife and a band of misfits unite to steal the ultimate weapon of destruction: Death Star.

This is Disney’s first attempt at expanding the Star War’s brand without its creator, George Lucas. Disney is entrusted with preserving and monetizing the storied brand further and they in turn have trust the 37-year-old Mexican actor can help carry the franchise to the next level.
