Oscar F-Up:  Don’t Blame the Latina!

Stop Blaming Latinas!

Why the hell can’t Martha Ruiz, accountant to the stars and celebrity envelope pusher, be allowed to return to the Academy Awards next year? As Gloria Pritchett, aka Sofia Vergara, once said in an episode of Modern Family – “They always blame the Latino.”

It was the clueless cluster of a man and star-f*cker Brian Cullinan that was found at fault for the biggest snafu in Oscar history. If Cullinan had not been busy tweeting and acting like a school boy at his first dance, Ruiz would still be making history as the first Latina Academy Award vote counter and only the second woman to be given the honor.

Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs herself noted that Cullinan’s distraction “set the disaster in motion.” PricewaterhouseCooper (PwC), who has been the Oscar vote tabulator for 83 years and employer of Ruiz and Cullinan, while taking “full responsibility” for the mix up, noted that “Cullinan mistakenly handed the back-up envelope” to Warren Beatty. Both Ruiz and Cullinan were dis-invited from Oscar envelope duties forever a honor they held for several years.

So why blame the Latina?

One report claims Ruiz and Cullinan “froze” and did not respond quickly to resolve the mess. Gary Natoli, Oscar stage manager noted “I’m sure they’re very lovely people, but they just didn’t have the disposition for this.” “You need somebody who’s going to be confident and unafraid.” He also described Ruiz as “low-key” going as far as to say she refused to face the music and lingered backstage even when Beatty’s co-presenter Faye Dunaway’s botox cracked indicating something was very wrong.

That’s a lot of observing Natoli was doing while he himself was in the middle of the Oscar stage chaos.

Let’s not forget the clueless Cullinan is Ruiz’s superior, lead partner for the Academy’s annual balloting process and a managing partner at PwC. No one knows if Ruiz was being deferential but the possibility should be considered.

Ruiz should not just be remembered as an accidental accountant which belies her nearly 20 years in the profession. Ruiz specializes in tax compliance and counts numerous Hollywood types as her client. Prior to being selected to this accounting honor she toiled behind the scenes as part of the Oscar balloting team.

It needs to be noted that the profession of accounting lacks diversity with only 3 percent of Certified Public Accountants being Latino.
